If you’re in San Jose staring at a car with dents, rust, a cracked windshield, or accident damage and wondering, “Can I still donate this?” the answer is yes. Body damage does not disqualify your vehicle from donation through Bay Wheels to benefit Heritage for the Blind. Whether your car was sideswiped on 280, hailed on in Willow Glen, or picked up some rust sitting in an East San Jose driveway, we can still accept it – running or not.
Here’s how it works in California: cosmetic or structural body damage is fine. You do not need to fix the dents, replace the glass, or handle any paint or rust repair. We’ll arrange free towing from anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area – from Almaden Valley to North San Jose, Evergreen, Berryessa, Campbell, Santa Clara, and beyond. Your car will be sold as-is. Your deduction is based on the actual sale price after pickup, not on how the car looks. Even if damage lowers the sale price, you’ll still receive a minimum $500 tax receipt. If it sells for more than $500, you’ll get the higher amount documented on the IRS Form 1098‑C. It’s a straightforward way to clear a problem vehicle and support people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Start by sharing the basics: year, make, model, and any major body issues like dents, rust, cracked windows, accident, or storm damage. You don’t need photos or repair estimates. We just need an honest overview so we can schedule the right type of tow in San Jose or anywhere in the South Bay.
2. Schedule free pickup anywhere in San Jose
We’ll arrange a licensed tow truck to pick up your car at no cost, whether it’s in your driveway in Willow Glen, a carport in Milpitas, a shop in Santa Clara, or a curb in Japantown. Running or not, damaged or drivable, we handle all logistics and coordinate a pickup window that works for you.
3. Sign a few quick documents at pickup
At pickup, you’ll sign the title and a simple release form so ownership can be transferred to Heritage for the Blind. Our towing partner will walk you through where to sign. If you’re unsure about your California title or it’s damaged, let us know in advance so we can help you prepare.
4. We sell your car as-is, damage and all
Your vehicle is transported to auction or a licensed buyer in the Bay Area. Dents, rust, cracked glass, and body damage are all factored into the sale. You don’t pay for repairs or towing. The net proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired.
5. Receive your tax receipt (minimum $500)
After the vehicle sells, Bay Wheels sends you a written tax receipt. By law, your federal deduction is based on the actual sale price. If your damaged vehicle sells for $500 or less, you still receive a receipt for $500. If it sells for more, you’ll get documentation for that higher amount, usually on IRS Form 1098‑C.
6. Claim your deduction and enjoy the cleared space
You can then use your receipt when you file your federal taxes, subject to IRS rules. Meanwhile, you’ve cleared that problem car from your driveway, street, or apartment lot in San Jose, avoided repair bills, and helped fund services for people with vision loss through Heritage for the Blind.
Potential complications to watch for
Severe accident or frame damage may lower sale price
Tip: Major collision or frame damage is acceptable, but it can reduce what the vehicle sells for. That may mean your deduction is closer to the $500 minimum. Be upfront about the condition so we can route the vehicle correctly and avoid resale delays.
Missing or damaged California title can slow things down
Tip: We strongly prefer a clear California title, even when the car has heavy body damage. If your title is lost or damaged, tell us early. We can explain what the DMV typically requires so you can request a duplicate and keep your donation on track.
Vehicles blocked in garages or tight parking spots
Tip: Tow trucks need reasonable access. If your car is in a tight Willow Glen alley, underground downtown garage, or wedged behind another vehicle, let us know. We’ll help you plan access or suggest simple steps so the tow operator can safely reach the car.
Personal items left inside a totaled or storm‑damaged car
Tip: Once the tow truck removes your vehicle, it may be hard to retrieve anything left inside. Before pickup, remove garage openers, toll tags, paperwork, plates (if you prefer), and personal belongings, especially in cars with broken glass or water intrusion.
